World's top new landmarks

The new best landmarks in the world are ...

Arizona's Grand Canyon Skywalk is the best new bridge, New York by Gehry the top new skyscraper and the Statue of Liberty the most visited landmark, according to Travel + Leisure magazine.

The New York-based travel magazine conducted an online survey last year to discover the world's top new landmarks.

Some 60 landmarks were rated in different categories -- skyscrapers; parks and public spaces; museums; bridges; sports and performance venues as well as classic landmarks.

New landmarks are defined as landmarks opened after 1996, while classic landmarks are those opened in or before 1996.

Respondents were also asked if they had actually been to the sites to identify which are the "most seen" landmarks.

Although the results are heavily skewed to the United States, Beijing's National Stadium, the "Bird's Nest," and Mexico City's shiny silver Museo Soumaya managed to take the top spots for their respective categories.

Philippines sets tree-planting record

The event, which saw 64,096 trees planted in just 15 minutes, is part of a government drive to reforest parts of the country

Residents planting tree seedlings in the town of Pili in Camarines Sur province on February 23.

Conservationists planted a total of 64,096 trees in the eastern Philippine province of Camrines Sur within 15 minutes recently, breaking the Guinness World Record for the most trees planted simultaneously.

The Independent reported that close to 7,000 people from Siruma and Tinambac participated in the tree planting activity, which was organized under the El Verde ("The Green") program.

The provincial government plans to plant 12 million trees in the denuded forests of Camrines Sur by 2012. The idea is to make Camrines Sur "the greenest and most environmentally friendly province in Asia."

Camrines Sur is already one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines.

El Verde's feat smashed the record that was set last year by volunteers in the Himalayan district of Leh, where a total of 50,300 Ladakhi willows were planted in under an hour.

Global green group Conservation International recently ranked the Philippines as one of the top 10 endangered forest hotspots in the world, with only 7 percent of its original habitat remaining.

Without Wikipedia, where can you get your facts?

Wikipedia has blacked out its English-language site for 24 hours. So how will its regular readers get information?

Work-averse students, corner-cutting journalists and people who simply enjoy wasting time online are in for a testing day.

Wikipedia, the user-generated internet encyclopaedia, has temporarily removed its 3.8 million English-language pages in protest against proposed US anti-piracy laws.

It might be an inconvenience for those who rely on it. But for those who don't wish to endure an information blackout, there are plenty of other places to look instead.

Perhaps the most loyal Wikipedia addicts will find this a pleasant change. Alternatively, for those who have come to depend on it, the withdrawal symptoms might be excruciating.

Either way, the shutdown offers a rare insight into what the modern world would look like minus Wikipedia - and whether society would be better or worse as a result.

Go to the library
Those feeling lost without Wikipedia can turn to that most traditional of research tools - the book.

It's a habit they should get into more often, according to Andrew Orlowski, executive editor of technology news site The Register.

While he believes the internet's egalitarian ethos has been a positive force, Orlowski fears that it has also come at the expense of standards of scholarship and expertise normally required by editors of the printed word. "It encourages a kind of intellectual laziness," he adds.

The campaign to save libraries in the UK threatened by cuts might suggest they continue to occupy a unique place in the public affections, regardless of hi-tech competitors.

But for Dr Mark Graham of the Oxford Internet Institute, who has studied the Wikipedia phenomenon, they have some serious disadvantages compared with their online equivalents.

"For many people just getting to a library is hard, it's time-consuming, whereas you can consult Wikipedia anywhere, from your phone," he says. "It's open access, it's free."

Pick up the phone
It's the time-honoured technique employed by fact-checkers, researchers and journalists. If in doubt, ring an expert and ask them.

Orlowski believes it is a habit many regular Wikipedia readers could benefit from adopting. A university professor, for instance, will have attained their status though hard work and study, he says - Wikipedia editors, by contrast, only need a broadband connection.

But supporters of the site argue that it does not claim the same authority as peer-reviewed scholarship and should, instead, be seen as a starting point for research.

Moreover, Graham argues that Wikipedia's collaborative editing ensures mistakes are quickly corrected - a verdict backed up by a 2005 study by the journal Nature.

"It's hard to keep blatant falsehoods up for long because there are so many eyeballs on it," he says.

20 million articles, 3.8 million of them in English

Other websites

It might not be apparent from some of the more fevered coverage of the shutdown, but there is plenty of internet out there beyond Wikipedia.

As such, the site's rivals have no doubt braced themselves for a surge in traffic.

Those looking a reference fix can turn to the online edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which claims to be the oldest such compendium still in print.

Online-only alternatives include Scholarpedia, whose entries are peer-reviewed by experts; Encyclopedia.com; and Citizendium, which was set up by Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger.

If all else fails, those who cannot cope without Wikipedia for 24 hours can familiarise themselves with Google cache.

See for yourself
For the most dedicated browsers, it is perhaps the most radical solution of all - switch off your computer altogether and see the world for yourself.

Orlowski hopes this is a trend that catches on. While the internet has undoubtedly broadened the scope for sharing human knowledge, he argues, people have become accustomed to acquiring knowledge through their computer screens rather than first-hand.

"The primacy of direct experience has definitely been lost," he says. "People end up relying on other people's opinions."

Graham agrees that looking beyond Wikipedia's parameters is no bad thing. For instance, the site tells us a lot about the West but considerably less about Africa, he argues.

"Wikipedia does a great job of telling us what it knows about," he says. "But there are huge gaps."

Use your memory
If all else fails, those struggling to come up with the name of the capital of Laos or the birthplace of Otis Redding can always try falling back on their powers of recall.

Or can they?

Orlowski suspects many dedicated web users have, like him, become too accustomed to the ease and convenience of search engines and online sources to depend on their memory.

"It's too late for that," he says ruefully. "It's like second nature now."

Top places to visit in 2012

Factor in your holiday allowance, the cost of flight plus hotel and the various weddings and baptisms you will inevitably have to attend, and your visit time in 2012 is anything but unlimited.

So here are seven places that should come top of your 2012 trip list.

1. Yeosu, Korea

The spectacular uninhibited Baek-do archipelago in Yeosu.

“The Living Ocean and Coast” is the hopeful theme of this year’s marine-focused World Expo (May 12-August 12) being held in Korea’s coastal city of Yeosu.
From a distance, the event’s plankton mascots and sub-themes like “Preservation and Sustainable Development of the Ocean and Coast” and “New Resources Technology” seem straight out of a grad school syllabus -- but look closer and this one promises to be one of the most stylish and sophisticated World Fairs yet.
The event is expected to draw 100 participating countries, and to wow eight million visitors with floating pavilions, dazzling offshore multi-media shows, a vast Ocean Experience Park representing life in the world’s five major oceans, and various forms of architectural grandeur (including a mock-up, high-tech, coastal city of 2050) all supporting the idea that human prosperity is inextricably tied to a healthier planet.

2. Antarctica
Turn off your engines and visit Antarctica.

In the final, seventh episode of the BBC nature documentary series “Frozen Planet,” viewers are witness to what’s considered “the largest recent natural event on our planet” -- the collapse of the Jamaica-sized Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica.
No matter where you stand on climate change, the White Continent is incontrovertibly, irreversibly changing.
And maybe it’s really time to see it without the David Attenborough narration. Huge tabular iceberg “graveyards,” frenzies of wild penguins and the most pristine, otherworldly landscape available without a rocket ship are all here.
Quark Expeditions (www.quarkexpeditions.com) runs several up-close Antarctica journeys, including voyages to the continent’s remote east coast, rare penetrations inside the Antarctic Circle and an “Introduction to Antarctica” trip that covers all the basics for under US$4,000.

3. Poland and Ukraine

The National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.

Who doesn’t love a major sporting event with “crazy road trip” written all over it?
Euro 2012 (June 8-July 1) -- the 14th European Football Championship -- looks like just the ticket. UEFA’s big tournament has decided it’s time for something different, with the usual sites of France, England and the like giving way to stadiums in Poland and Ukraine.
That’s the farthest “out” this tournament has ever ventured, or likely ever will. All games will be split between eight cities -- four in each country -- with quarter-final and semi-final games in Warsaw and Kiev (which will host the final).
Ticket sales have been feverish since last spring, but fans can log onto the Euro 2012 site’s “Tour Operator Programme” to purchase all-inclusive packages from UEFA-licensed tour operators.

4. Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii

Aerial view of the new memorial building that straddles the sunken USS Arizona battleship.

Last year’s US$56-million Pearl Harbor Visitor Center project, featuring a new museum, movie theaters and exhibits on a redone seven-hectare campus, makes Hawaii’s assemblage of historic naval vessels even more visit-worthy.
Highlights include the deck of the 45,000-ton USS Missouri (aka the site of Japan’s surrender), the cramped quarters of the USS Bowfin Submarine and the wreckage of the USS Utah from a viewing platform on Ford Island.
The most arresting site lies offshore at the commemorative and newly refurbished USS Arizona Memorial, situated over a sunken battleship that entombed 1,177 Marines and sailors in its hull.
The restored offshore memorial structure stretching over the huge, shadowy wreck makes its re-debut on May 28 (Memorial Day), marking the 50th anniversary of the monument’s opening day.

5. Calgary, Canada

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge helped usher in festivities at the 2011 Calgary Stampede.

Every summer, Canada’s cowboy epicenter, Calgary, Alberta, hits its boot-kickin’, bronco-bustin’, team-ropin’, chuckwagon-fare-samplin’, Duke-&-Duchess-of-Cambridge-attendin’ stride at the annual Calgary Stampede -- a treasured national event that’s been dubbed the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.”
In 1912, a traveling vaudevillian launched the event, aiming to preserve old western values and heritage. That means this year marks the rodeo’s centennial. In other words, pardner, the Calgary Stampede (July 6-15) just got even greater.
More than 700,000 visitors are expected to attend this year’s festivities at Stampede Park, which hosts premier rodeo events at the Stampede Grandstand like the GMC Rangeland Derby, as well as hundreds of general admission exhibits, concerts and activities.

6. Myanmar

A vendor sells posters of independence leader General Aung San and his daughter, democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon.

An isolated dictatorship besieged by economic sanctions, human rights violations and a long-standing international “tourism boycott” fostered by its own repressed pro-democracy movement -- few countries have fueled as much debate among travelers as Myanmar.
But while the tourism debate and sanctions linger on, Aung San Suu Kyi’s release and a cautiously revised National League for Democracy party line encouraging responsible travel to the country suggest that, while it may be too early to schedule a full-fledged Vietnam- or even Cambodia-style “Burmese tourism renaissance,” times are changing.
So for on-the-fence travelers, 2012 could be the year to re-engage in a pristine Southeast Asian landscape replete with timeless scenery, startling monuments, countless pagodas and charming locals who haven’t given up hope.

7. London, England

No stranger to the Olympics, London will host the Games for a third time around.

Home of this year’s Summer Olympics (July 27-August 12), London will become the first city to host the modern games for a third time.
To prove itself worthy it will feature a steroidal, 200-hectare Olympic Park facility and an assortment of city-wide, traveler-friendly prep measures that include an expanded high-speed rail transit system, a Gateway Travelcard good for free day-of-event commuting for ticketholders, and a “maintain normal prices” pledge signed by several London tourist attractions.
Many of the Summer Games’ 300-plus events (held at over 30 venues) will take place in the usual London hot spots: Wembley soccer, Wimbledon tennis and North Greenwich Arena basketball.
Think US$900 for gymnastics finals tickets and US$1,400 for track and field ceremony day. But fear not. There are still plenty of US$44 badminton preliminary round seats too.

Google+ up to 62 million users, report says

Paul Allen, a Google+ watcher whose estimates about the social network's growth have proved accurate in the past, claims that the site now has 62 million users and is adding 625,000 new users per day.

"It may be the holidays, the TV commercials, the Android 4 signups, celebrity and brand appeal, or positive word of mouth or a combination of all these factors," Allen wrote on his G+ profile page Tuesday, "but there is no question that the number of new users signing up for Google+ each day has accelerated markedly in the past several weeks."

Allen, the founder of Ancestry.com, takes an unusual approach to come by his estimates: He and his staff run hundreds of queries on surnames they've been tracking since July and then extrapolate the size of the network.

At this rate, Allen writes, G+ will reach 100 million users by February 25, 2012 and 200 million by August 3. By this time next year, G+ will have close to 300 million users.

 2011: Social media & technology

Allen, however, doesn't address how many of those 62 million are active users. Experian Hitwise, however, found that those users are on the rise as well, though they represent a fraction of G+'s base. Hitwise found that total visits to G+ hit 9.4 million for the week ending December 17, the most recent full week it tracked.

That was a nice jump over the 7.2 million visits G+ experienced in the comparable week in November, but below the 15 million visits to G+ for the week ending September 24, when Google opened the previously invitation-only site to the public.

Google's last official acknowledgment of G+'s membership came during a conference call with analysts, when CEO Larry Page pegged the figure at 40 million.

The 10 biggest tech stories of 2011

The technology industry often finds itself pontificating about the future, but the busy news cycle this year gave us plenty to discuss.

Very influential tech pioneers died; cyber-security cost companies billions of dollars; and trends in electronics and on the Web provided new tools and created new challenges.

Smartphones and tablets each grew so immensely this year that we decided to give them their own mobile year-in-review list.

As for future talk, there were plenty of bold, futuristic initiatives that did not quite bear fruit this year.

The seeds of Hewlett-Packard's mobile strategy, Google's plans for Motorola post-acquisition, Intel's 3-D silicon transistors and mobile payment systems like Google Wallet were planted this year. But those stories were left off of this list because their products did not reach a mass market in 2011. Look for those to make big splashes in 2012.

These 10 stories in 2011 had a huge impact that could resonate for many years:

1. Steve Jobs dies

From humble middle-class roots to running the most valuable tech company in the world, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was powerful and revered. His death on October 5 after a long battle with cancer made waves around the world.

Public grieving could be seen outside Apple's hundreds of stores, where fans left flowers, candles and written notes of tribute. His authorized biography by Walter Isaacson, which came out in November, instantly became a bestseller.

At Apple, Jobs helped create the personal computer industry, and built a team that worked with him to design mega hits like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. He also found time to lead Pixar Animation Studios, the "Toy Story" creator that the Walt Disney Co. paid $7.4 billion to acquire in 2006.

The fast-paced tech industry halted for a moment after Jobs' death this year, prompting business and world leaders to speak publicly about his impact. It may never be the same after.

2. Social media's role as a tool for protestors

Much praise was heaped on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube after they played a role in the Arab Spring, a series of protests in the Middle East that started late in 2010.

Use of social networks to spread the word about demonstrations persisted this year, especially in the Egyptian uprising that toppled longtime President Hosni Mubarak.

In London, participants in riots used BlackBerry Messenger.

Micro reports from Occupy Wall Street and other U.S. protests frequently popped up on Twitter.

Perhaps in a nod to those events, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said onstage at his conference this year, "We exist at the intersection of technology and social issues."

3. Hackers

The Guy Fawkes mask, a stark white symbol of political upheaval, can be seen at many Occupy protests, but the accessory from the movie "V for Vendetta" was adopted earlier by an online group called Anonymous.

Members of the loosely organized group emerged from the Internet underground this year with a series of politically fueled computer attacks on churches, e-commerce and banks. A sister group called Lulz Security staged its own hacks before quickly vanishing.

After Sony's online networks had been hacked, researchers discovered a file planted on one of its servers containing the Anonymous chant, "We are legion." The word "hack" was so ingrained in people's vernacular after all of these incidents that it became a catchphrase anytime a site was down or an account password had
been stolen.

4. Tablet market gets dozens of new entrants

The decade-old tablet PC market received a jolt with new products this year, sparked by the massive success of Apple's iPad.

Electronics makers tried to figure out whether consumers were looking for tablets or just iPads. Google, with its Android tablets, and Research in Motion, with the BlackBerry PlayBook, were not pleased with the answer.

Amazon.com may have cracked the formula with its $199 Kindle Fire. It has been selling about a million devices each week since it debuted in November. Hewlett-Packard only managed to attract meaningful sales to its TouchPad when it ran a $99 fire sale to clear inventory.

5. Facebook and partners add 'frictionless' sharing

What do you call it when someone you know finds out something about you without you telling them?
Facebook calls it "frictionless," and companies that have implemented the feature, including some music-streaming services and news publishers, have found a great promotional vehicle.

Still, many are opposed to their private reading habits being broadcast instantly to their Facebook pages. Zuckerberg is convinced people will continue publishing more about themselves online each year -- now, whether they actively choose to or not.

6. Patent wars

The biggest names in mobile, including Apple, Google, HTC, Microsoft, RIM and Samsung, have engaged in a giant game of patent Risk.

These companies have filed lawsuits and countersuits in countries around the world to seek licensing agreements or block the sale of rivals' products. Google has said that its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola

7. Google+

People are spending more of their time on social networks than searching the Web. In other words, more Facebook and less Google.

So Google created its own Facebook-like environment in Google+. Users can share photos and browse friends' updates.

Google+ got off to a promising start, but Facebook has had a long lead. Google asserts that its social network is key to the future of the company. That's a big bet.

8. Apple becomes the most valuable company in the world

When Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, he said the company was weeks away from bankruptcy. Over the next decade, he orchestrated a masterful turnaround that culminated in Apple briefly becoming the world's most valuable company by market capitalization.

Exxon Mobil has reclaimed a sizable lead, but that shouldn't undermine how effective Apple has been in creating a lust for gizmos. The ultra-thin iPad 2 has done gangbusters, and the iPhone 4S, with Siri, has introduced voice-command services to a wider audience this year.

9. IBM's Watson beats human champs on 'Jeopardy!'

At times, the Watson computer, built by IBM, failed to understand some nuances of the English language, prompting mocking laughter.

However, as the world had learned when IBM's Deep Blue defeated chess champion Gary Kasparov, computers aren't clueless. Watson proved that two smart men, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, were no match for banks of servers running artificial-intelligence software.

10. Spotify and Facebook take on digital music

With iTunes and iPod, Apple had a strong formula for dominating the digital music industry. Amazon and Google haven't made a dent.

But Spotify has proved itself as a worthy opponent in Europe, and after years of negotiations with the record labels, it finally hit U.S. shores this year.

Facebook Music, a page that shows what friends are listening to, has helped introduce wider audiences to on-demand streaming services like Spotify, MOG, Rdio and Rhapsody.

Revolutionary blogger freed in Egypt

A prominent Egyptian blogger freed by an Egyptian judge on Sunday lambasted the military government and said "nothing has changed" since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power in February.

"It's not the end of the case, that I am out. The real criminals, the generals of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, are still at large and they must be tried," said Alaa Abd El-Fattah, whose case is pending further investigation. "I have been released, but there are thousands that remain in prison. "

El-Fattah, who has become a focal point of tensions between protesters and Egypt's military rulers, headed directly to Cairo's Tahrir Square, flanked by dozens of activists. "Down with military rule," the group chanted. "The people want to execute Marshall Tantawi."

Mohamed Hussein Tantawi is field marshal of the supreme council, Egypt's military rulers in the wake of
former President Hosni Mubarak's ouster in popular protests at the beginning of the year.

Judge Tharwat Hamad, representing the prosecutor's office, ordered El-Fattah's release while authorities look into the clashes where he was arrested in late October.

"He is banned from traveling and no court date has been set yet," said Adel Saeed, official spokesman for the General Prosecutor.

El-Fattah is charged with resisting arrest, inciting violence against the army, killing members of the armed forces, attempting to storm the government TV building, and destroying Armed Forces buildings, Saeed said.

The 29-year-old blogger, who was outspoken for years against Mubarak's regime, was imprisoned October 30 amid battles between the military and pro-democracy protesters struggling to pave a clear path for their ongoing revolution.

El-Fattah refused to answer questions of his interrogators ahead of a military tribunal and was detained originally for 15 days, which was extended for a month until his release.

His sister Mona Seif, featured in a CNN documentary called "iRevolution: Online Warriors Of The Arab Spring," is a prominent activist and founding member of a group lobbying against trying civilians under military tribunals.

"I am so happy," said Seif, who told CNN the whole family was waiting for him outside Cairo's Security Directorate.

"He has been in jail unlawfully for close to two months," Seif said, adding that the family was "glad this judge was decent, unlike the corrupt judges who handled the case before."

Egyptian "Twitteratis" celebrated el-Fattah's release. The hashtag #AlaaisFree started trending globally.
A computer software developer, el-Fattah participated in the January 25 uprisings that toppled Mubarak.

Since then he has been speaking against the country's military rulers.

The Supreme Council says it will hand over power once a new government is in place. But many protesters fear the military is seeking to maintain a tight grip on the country.

El-Fattah was among the activists who pointed fingers at the military after their attack on a Coptic Christian protest on October 9 that left 27 people dead at the epicenter of the clashes outside Egypt's State TV building known as Maspero.

His detention, along with 27 men charged in the same case, sparked international and local support, as many activists had identified with his work for years.

In June, he founded and moderated " Tweet Nadwa," a discussion based on the rules of Twitter conversations in which attendees raised political questions using only 140 characters.

CNN attended the first such gathering, at which Alaa moderated a topic revolving around Egypt's future, which was broadcast online. The symposium was also held in New York, moderated by Egyptians living in the United States.

El-Fattah has spoken around the world since the toppling of Mubarak, including in Britain, Tunisia, South Africa and the United States. When his family received the prosecutor's order summoning him for questioning last October, he was in San Francisco speaking to university students.

Solidarity protests and sit-ins against his detention took place outside Egyptian embassies. Stencils of his portrait have been sprayed all over the walls of Tahrir Square, labeling him a hero.

His wife Manal had their first baby while he was in prison. They named the boy Khaled, after Khaled Saeed, a man killed by Egyptian police. Saeed's death sparked outrage among the opposition that helped lead to the uprising on January 25, which culminated in Mubarak's ouster February 11.

El-Fattah's family started a Twitter account for the new baby and gave it the handle @Khalaaa, which now has more than 3,000 followers.

When his wife visited him during his incarceration, he gave her a letter addressing Egyptian activists, which was published in a local newspaper.

In it, he said the Supreme Council had "hijacked" the revolution. And he compared his latest imprisonment with the jail time he served in 2006 during Mubarak's era for views he posted on his blog against the regime at the time.

"I never expected to repeat the experience of five years ago," El-Fattah wrote. "After a revolution that deposed the tyrant, I go back to his jails?"

More than 1,000 missing in Philippines after storm

More than 1,000 people are missing in the aftermath of a tropical storm that wreaked havoc across the southern Philippines last weekend, the country's government said Friday, as it grappled with the mounting humanitarian crisis in the region.

A total of 1,079 people remain unaccounted for, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a statement. Earlier in the week, the disaster council said it had lost count of the number of missing as it tried to assess the scale of the destruction.

The death toll from Tropical Storm Washi, which set off landslides and flash floods that swept away whole villages, has risen to 1,080, according to the council.

The United Nations said Wednesday that the storm has created "huge" humanitarian needs on the island of Mindanao, the scene of the worst devastation. It has made an appeal to raise $28 million to deal with the immediate problems in the area, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced in and around the port cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.

"I was shocked by scale of destruction I saw," David Carden, the head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Philippines told CNN on Thursday after visiting the region. He said it looked as if an "inland tsunami had struck the area."

Around 675,000 people have been affected by the storm, the disaster council said Friday, with more than 300,000 of them being taken care of at evacuation centers at the moment.

President Benigno Aquino of the Philippines has declared a state of national calamity following the storm.
The disaster council said it estimated the cost of the damage caused by the storm at more than one billion Philippines pesos ($23 million).

Storm leaves huge humanitarian needs in Philippines, U.N. says

The devastation in the southern Philippines left by Tropical Storm Washi has created "huge" humanitarian needs in the area, the United Nations said Wednesday, estimating that nearly a half-million people are in need of assistance.

"The first priority is to help those who are displaced as a result of the floods," Valerie Amos, the U.N. emergency relief coordinator, said in comments published on the organization's website. "People urgently need shelter and clean drinking water, as well as bedding, food and basic household items."

Amos called on other countries and international organizations to increase relief efforts for the stricken region.

A number of U.N. agencies, including the World Food Program and the World Health Organization, have stepped up humanitarian measures in the past few days, she said.

The storm, known locally as Sendong, plowed across the southern Philippines over the weekend, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless and aid agencies struggling to deal with the aftermath.

The United Nations estimated that about 285,000 people had been displaced, with many of them finding shelter with relatives or in makeshift structures.

The death toll from the storm has increased to 1,002, Benito Ramos, head of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said earlier Wednesday.

That grim announcement came a day after President Benigno Aquino declared a state of national calamity after visiting areas on the island of Mindanao that were ravaged by flash floods and landslides from the storm.

The Red Cross has said that hundreds of people remain unaccounted for after entire villages were swept away.

The worst of the destruction took place in the port cities Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, which do not usually experience storms as intense as Washi.

Death toll from tropical storm in Philippines rising

The death toll from a tropical storm in the southern Philippines has reached more than 900, an official with the country's disaster agency said Monday.

Benito Ramos of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the toll stood at 927.
The Philippines Red Cross reported a lower death toll, at 713.

Tropical Storm Washi affected more than 167,000 people, the council said in a report Monday. About 88,000 people were being served at evacuation centers.

President Beningo Aquino plans to visit the region Tuesday.

U.S. President Barack Obama issued a statement Monday expressing "deep condolences for the tremendous loss of life and devastation."

He said the United States "stands ready to assist the Philippine people and government should humanitarian assistance and recovery efforts be needed."

The Red Cross noted that hundreds are missing after entire villages were swept away. The stench of death permeated the air as aid workers scrambled to help survivors.

Military and disaster officials said the vast majority of the dead were found in the port cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, many of them swept away as they were sleeping. Water-logged bodies from washed-away villages floated at the shoreline on the northwestern coast of Mindanao island.

Five people were killed in a landslide, but virtually all the others died in flash flooding after Tropical Storm Washi, which is called Sendong locally.

Survivors in the hardest-hit areas are contending with no electricity or clean drinking water. One woman in Cagayan de Oro collected murky brown floodwater in a bucket, just meters away from where a destroyed vehicle was submerged.

Flash flooding overnight Friday, following 10 hours of rain, fueled the devastation. As much as 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain fell within 24 hours in some areas. December generally brings about 60 millimeters of rain (a little over 2 inches) to the region.
